How It All began

1953
First corrugated box factory in Singapore started by Australian Consolidated Industries (ACI)
Late 1960s - 1970s
Manufacturing expanded to electronics, which drove up demand for packaging like corrugated boxes
1965
Singapore gained independence, boosted manufacturing, and became a key trade hub
1965 onwards
More corrugated box plants opened in Jurong Industrial Estate
1968-1980
High demand drove growth and oversupply created competition
1982-1983
A price war caused box prices to drop by 20–25%, which hurt the industry
Early 1984
Industry leaders agreed to form an association to stabilize the market
10 August 1984
Corrugated Box Manufacturers' Association (CBMA) was officially founded

Sustainability

At CBMA, sustainability isn’t just a goal — it’s a responsibility we take seriously as part of our commitment to the community and the environment.

Corrugated paper packaging stands out as one of the most eco-friendly solutions in the packaging industry. Made from renewable resources, it is lightweight, strong, and designed to be fully recyclable. Unlike single-use plastics or non-biodegradable materials, corrugated packaging can be reused, repurposed, and recycled multiple times, reducing its overall environmental footprint.

As Singapore advances toward a zero-waste future, corrugated packaging plays a vital role in driving this transition. It supports circular economy practices by keeping valuable resources in use for as long as possible while minimizing waste sent to landfills. At the same time, innovations in corrugated design allow for packaging that is not only sustainable but also functional, cost-effective, and adaptable to diverse industries.
  • Renewable & Recyclable
Corrugated board is made from recycled paper and is itself 100% recyclable, making it a circular packaging solution. In Singapore, over 70% of paper waste was recycled in 2023. According to National Environment Agency (NEA) statistics, it was the highest among all waste streams.
  • Support for Singapore’s Zero Waste Vision
As part of the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the country aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to Semakau Landfill by 30% by 2030. Choosing paper-based packaging supports this effort by contributing to a circular economy and reducing reliance on non-recyclable materials.
  • Lower Carbon Footprint
Producing corrugated packaging typically uses less energy and emits fewer greenhouse gases compared to plastic or metal packaging.
  • Biodegradable & Compostable
Unlike plastic, which can take hundreds of years to break down, paper-based packaging naturally decomposes in weeks — reducing landfill burden and marine pollution risk.

Corrugated Recycles Symbol

The Corrugated Recycles symbol is a globally recognized mark that promotes the recyclability of corrugated packaging. Simple and impactful, the symbol can be used freely and without registration, helping raise awareness of paper-based packaging's environmental benefits.

What the Symbol Represents
The phrase "Corrugated Recycles" is both an informative label and a public statement — it tells consumers that corrugated packaging is designed to be recycled. It does not mean that the material is made from recycled content, but rather that it can and should be recycled after use.

When to Use It
The symbol is recommended for all corrugated products that are easily recyclable — particularly those that haven’t been treated with coatings or materials (like wax) that would limit their recyclability.

If the product is not readily recyclable, the symbol should not be used, as this could lead to confusion and contamination in recycling streams.

Where It Can Be Displayed
Beyond packaging, the Corrugated Recycles symbol can be used on any platform that supports education or advocacy for recycling corrugated materials is a great place to display it.

Symbol Variations
The symbol is available in different styles to suit various design applications. Use a version that is clear, legible, and proportionate to your packaging or communication material.
